Rubiaceae

Rothmannia whitfieldii (Lindl.) Dandy

General Information

The genus Rothmannia is one of the few that has three leaves appearing from the same node. This species is easy to recognise because of the enormous pendant flower with the huge enlarged stigma which hangs on a surprisingly threadlike style. The ridged fruit are about 5 cm wide and unmistakable. Without flowers and fruit this species is readily identified by the leaves that are up to 30 cm long with dense velvety hairs on their under surfaces.

Ecology

This species occurs in open places, such as large light gaps in terra firma forest, fields and roadsides. The flowers open at night and have a slight scent.

Distribution

Distribution: Senegal to Sudan, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Angola.
